MLI’s Multicultural Series for Behavioral Health Prevention Professionals:  African-American Cultures

This workshop provides 6 hours of training for those working in a prevention setting in behavioral/mental health. DMHAS' SPF-SIG/BP/ and PFS Grantees are highly encouraged to attend! This training is foundational for your programming. Those involved in prevention program planning, implementation, and evaluation who are seeking more information about working with African American/African-Origin  individuals,families and community members are encouraged to attend. This training will deliver information and interactive activities.

•         The diversity of African-American/African-Origin Cultures.

 •         Risk and protective factors, health disparities, and the impacts upon the behavioral health of communities will be explored.

 •         The roles of historical events, institutional and individual discrimination and prejudice and the impacts upon wellness and illness in prevention, treatment and recovery.

•         Working with individuals, families and communities: how to communicate and to engage  communities effectively to provide culturally appropriate services and resources.

Methods: Presentation & Dialogue, Audio visuals, Interactive activities & Hands-on exercises.

Class size: This interactive training is limited to 30 participants. Registration open until filled or 1 week prior to event, whichever comes first.

ATTENTION PREVENTION PROVIDERS:  This is a training for DMHAS funded prevention providers, particularly focused for SPF-SIG/BP and PFS grantees and their members. It will help the interaction on the day of the event, if you can bring your SPF-SIG/ Best Practice/Performance for Success Plans or Program's Cultural Competency Plans with you, or review them prior to attending. That way, you can ensure you are meeting your training needs on how to apply this prevention-oriented information to the "5 Steps" for your specific DMHAS-Funded grant programs. Remember, this is a foundational class that should help you apply theory to your SPF-SIG/BP/PFS practice and steps.
